The distribution of haptoglobin types in Aichi Prefecture.
Polymorphism of haptoglobin (Hp) types was examined among 2,087 unrelated residents of Aichi Prefecture. The phenotypic distribution obtained agreed well with the genetic hypothesis. The frequency of Hpl gene in Aichi Prefecture was estimated to be 0.247, which is quite similar to those observed in other districts of Japan. 57 A genetically determined polymorphism of haptoglobin (Hp) in human s...
متن کاملIn-air hearing of the great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo)
Many aquatic birds use sounds extensively for in-air communication. Regardless of this, we know very little about their hearing abilities. The in-air audiogram of a male adult great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) was determined using psychophysical methods (method of constants). Hearing thresholds were derived using pure tones of five different frequencies. The lowest threshold was at 2 kHz: 1...

متن کاملCharcoal cigarette filters and lung cancer risk in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
The lung cancer mortality rate has been lower in Japan than in the United States for several decades. We hypothesized that this difference is due to the Japanese preference for cigarettes with charcoal-containing filters, which efficiently absorb selected gas phase components of mainstream smoke including the carcinogen 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone. We analyzed a subset of smo...
